Facts about Botswana

Botswana is a country in Southern Africa with a population of a little over 2 million people, making it the most sparsely populated country in the world. Around 70% of the country is made up of the Kalahari Desert. The country was a British protectorate since the 1800s and gained its independence on September 30th, 1966.

Botswana is known internationally for its diverse wildlife and national parks. In addition, Botswana is the world's largest producer of diamonds. Unfortunately, Botswana also has one of the world's highest HIV infection rates. The government provides free ARV drugs and takes an active stance against HIV.

The Peace Corps started working in Botswana in 1966 and closed its program in 1997 due to the country's economic success. However, the government invited the Peace Corps to return in 2003 to help address HIV/AIDS, which was declared a national crisis in 1998.
